Freyberg: Churchill's Salamander, Barber, Laurie; Tonkin-Covell, John
1 Barber, Laurie; Tonkin-Covell, John Freyberg: Churchill's Salamander
Uk Random House New Zealand Ltd 1990 1869410521 / 9781869410520 1st Edition Hardcover Very Good Very Good Book 8vo - over 7 - 9
Freyberg is a fascinating study of New Zealand's most famous general during his most consequential years 1941-1945. With the declassification of intelligence material, used particularly in Crete and Mareth, Freyberg's command capability can be seen in a new light. This book contradicts previous accounts that question Freyberg's competence and describe him as cautious. The Authors examine Freyberg's battle plans and explain why he deserved to be called the "Salamander of the British Empire ". There is light wear to the top of the D/W.

This is a thrilling, modern war story. Visceral yet intelligent. Action packed but also emotional. Beattie never shrinks from portraying the horrors of war and his role in them, but the maturity of voice and heartfelt honesty sets this book apart from other military memoirs. This book offers an insight into the mission in Afghanistan and , crucially, the relationship between British troops and the Afghans they serve alongside. It demands to be read.
