Ilminster : A Potted History

Situated in south Somerset a few miles from the Devon and Dorset border and about eighteen miles from the Jurassic coast, and about ten miles from the county town of Taunton.  Ilminster is about a thousand years old ,starting out as a small collection of buildings around the church which has gradually grown into a ham stone built small market town, with a population of around 5,000 . It is a busy town with a variety of shops , pubs and cafe's two schools and a small industrial area. It is surrounded by farmland and small hills . To the north and north west are the Quantock, Mendip and Polden hills , and to the west are the Blackdown hills and on a clear day you can see Exmoor..

As well as the old buildings in the town there are a couple of interesting houses nearby, one is Barrington Court which is an Elizabethan manor house once owed by the Lyle family, and was one of the first properties to be owned by the National Trust who aquired in 1907. The second interesting house is Dillington House which was once the country estate of Lord North the Prime Minister in the government of George III,when he married Anne Speke, he was the Prime Minister who lost the American colonies. Also to the north is Sedgemoor  and Athelney  where King Alfred burnt the cakes, and where he set out to unite England against the vikings eleven hundred years ago. So if you find yourself in this part of Somerset, there are plenty of quaint villages and places to explore and we hope you enjoy your visit.
